Master John Kocyla (Also known as "Sifu", "Sensei" or "Professor") earned his 1st Black Belt in 1977. He has a 6th degree in Lima Lama, 6th Degree in American Chuan Chi, 7th Degree in American Kenpo through the F.T.K.A. (Frank Trejo Karate Asso) and 5th degree in EKKA (Elwood Kenpo Karate Asso) He was Inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Original Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2008. He is also a Master's Class Champion and Grand Champion in Weapons & Forms at competitions throughout the North West.
Mrs. K has a 2nd degree Black Belt in American Kenpo through the FTKA and is also an instructor here. She has taught Stage Fighting at the local High Schools Drama Dept. and Middle Schools and choreographe fight scenes for their plays. She has also competed in tournaments around Oregon.
The Kocylas believe that all Martial Arts are beneficial to promote Health and total Self Awareness. The American Kenpo System that we teach at this Studio is complete and suitable for anyone, man, woman or child.
Our dojo is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights starting at 5:30. Beginners and children's classes are at that time. Adults and Advanced classes are at 6:30.
The History
Head Instructor, Sifu John Kocyla, is a 7th degree master in American Kenpo. He began his training in the marine corps. in the late 1960's, then continued instruction in Southern California for many years. He has had many great instructors, including Tall Bear, Grasshopper, Fred Brewster, Ted Tabura and Ed Parker, Sr...the old timers know who these guys are...! His main instructor is Grand Master Frank Trejo, 10th Degree.
Mrs. K (Sensei Robyn Kocyla) received her 1st black belt at the age of 47 from Grandmaster Frank Trejo. She currently holds a 2nd degree in American Kenpo.
